South Ice Cap

The southern ice cap is big and flat (400 km long and 80 km wide) and is fulfilled with glaciers and snow. It is the home of several mountains with considerable dimensions. Some offer short approaches but many require multi-day approaches.

Mt Gorra Blanca (2907 mts.)

Touring skiing South PatagoniaThis peak lies on the edge of the ice-cap north of Fitz Roy and is one of the more accessible and easy mountains to ascend within this area of Patagonia.

Two days are required to reach the base of the mountain where a Chilean mountain hut provides shelter until the mountain is ready to be skied.

To attempt this mountain you will need at least 7 days.

* All of these ascents and descents can be combined with the classic traverse around Cerro Torre, through the ice cap and returning to el Chalten via Paso del Viento.

Mt. San Lorenzo (3706 mts)

Touring skiing South PatagoniaA high and impressive peak on the border between Chile and Argentina, is 200km north of Chalten. San Lorenzo can be accessed from both countries and is known as Cochrane on the Chilean side of the boarder.

Access through Cochrane has an easier and shorter approach with a very comfortable mountain hut to use as base camp. The ascent is through mostly easy terrain with low angled glaciers and a short, steep ice slope making it a semi-technical climb.

This expedition requires 2 weeks.
